This project focused on a long, narrow backyard where the challenges included poor soil, an awkward orientation, and existing trees and structures the client wished to retain. A significant proportion of lawn was also needed for their dog, while an ivy-covered boundary fence provided a natural backdrop for one of the new garden beds.
The client’s brief was for a soft planting palette in pinks and purples to complement their established lilac tree. To counter the block’s narrow proportions, I introduced curved, organic garden beds to soften the hard edges and create flow.
Plants were chosen for their adaptability to Ballarat’s frosts, cold winters, and mixed sun–shade conditions, with a blend of perennials and evergreens for year-round impact. Complementary flower shapes brought cohesiveness to the design, while corten steel edging was recommended for easy DIY installation. The client also received guidance on soil preparation, plant establishment, and lawn care to support the long-term success of the garden.
